Gartner does some research on ediscovery vendors
The marketplace for ediscovery tools is fairly volatile in nature, and a recent study by Gartner suggests that it may become even more difficult to compare vendors, as certain vendors merge, and other new entrants emerge on the scene. The study showed that the ediscovery marketplace was entering a period of high growth, thus leading to numerous new entrants. With the high growth, a trend was noticed of certain vendors consolidating positions, whilst some vendors are certainly maturing their product offerings. At the time of the Gartner research, not many ediscovery software reviews had been undertaken, but the research analysts had indicated that the market was mature enough to warrant the first Magic Quadrant that analyzed 24 ediscovery vendors. The major trend that was noticed and that was seen to be driving the market was the exponential growth in civil litigation, coupled with regulatory oversight required. As such, organizations are now required to produce documentation in a speedily manner in discovery phases of litigation. Estimates of the zize of the market range from just over $500 million to over $800 million in revenue. This is obviously a sizeable marketplace, and one in which numerous new entrants see a chance to make some quick cash. However, the trending topic of the research was that consolidation would eliminate at least a quarter of the software providers by 2014.
